Believe it or not, the entire section above was written by ChatGPT, with zero edits! I gave it two prompts- firstly, I asked, “Write an article about how music teachers could implement ChatGPT in their classroom”. The response was good, but not very engaging. So my next prompt was, “Now write it with a more engaging tone”.
Should we be concerned about ChatGPT?
With the rise of popularity around ChatGPT, much of the discussion has been focused on concerns around plagiarism and how students will use ChatGPT to cheat. Firstly, AI writing tools have been around for a number of years- ChatGPT just made it more conversational and accessible! In 2019 an entire textbook was written using AI.
In Music especially, when it comes to student work, we have the advantage that we are assessing students’ ability to analyse and interpret Music- something AI isn’t great at. I inputted a question asking ChatGPT to analyse a piece of music- and you can judge for yourself, but it’s certainly not going to be receiving top marks in my class! It’s certainly not bad, and actually did much better than I expected, but it definitely lacks specific musical examples and detail we would expect in a high level response. But judge for yourself, and consider ways you could actually use this to your advantage!
